here are all the dog movies I remember watching as a kid (mostly 90s/2000s, live action) plus some new ones
PAGE IN PROGRESS! Need to sort in 2 ways: by "emotional heaviness" and by media type (animation, live action, etc.)

Dog Movies by Emotional Level
"Happy" Dog Movies
These movies are feel-good movies without death or intense sadness. No major downers here!
- Beverly Hills Chihuahua - trailer (Youtube)
- If you enjoy it, there are two direct-to-video sequels to watch next: BHC 2 & 3.
- Pup Star - trailer (Youtube), note that while no one in this movie dies, the main dog character spends most of the moving THNKING her human companion died in an accident (though the viewer is shown she is alive and well), if this would be difficult for you to watch then I suggest watching one of the sequels instead.
- If you enjoy Pup Star, I highly recommend checking out the sequel movies: Pup Star Better 2Gether, Pup Star World Tour, and Puppy Star Christmas.
- Good Boy! (2003) - trailer (Youtube), NOT to be confused with various horror movies of the same name
- Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco
Mostly Happy with some Sad or Intense Momenets
- Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993) - trailer (Youtube), Some tense & perilous close-calls. Happy ending but if the tension of a cat or dog coming close to drowning, being lost and vulnerable to wild animals such as bears, or "not making it" due to old age would be too much for you, skip this one. Happy ending.
- Napoleon (1995) - trailer (Youtube), Sadness of a mother dog being separated from her child indefinitely. Some tense & perilous close-calls, if an animal being in danger of drowning or being trapped in a wildfire, sad goodbyes, and a puppy being attacked by a scary cat is too much for you, skip this one. Happy ending. Note: Has 2 English dubs - original Austrailian version, and an American version.
Pretty Sad but the Dog Doesn't Die
Heavy themes but it doesn't end in maximum suffering (for either the animals or the viewer).
- Babe (1995) - trailer (Youtube), Sad themes of pigs being raised for meat, domestic animals being separated from their mothers at a young age, farmer considers killing the pig main character at one point, sheep are preyed upon and in fear, aggressive male dog poses a danger to his female mate dog. Happy, moving ending. (Dogs are side-characters in this film.)
Sad Movies... ;-;
Get the tissues ready... Let me tell you, it's not hard to find a heart-breaking dog movie. *sniffle* May have major character/dog death.
*Clickable warnings button to come later.
