more short animations... memes... animatics... & more(!)(?)
here are some more short animations I like, too! I hope you enjoy! I really really love these amazing works artists put out~! I especially love how creative and experimental hobbyist, indie, and student artists' creations are! :D
(*I try to add content warnings where appropriate, I am doing my best but they may not be perfect, might be under or over-tagging sorry)
cw: cartoony, non-graphic depiction of a wild animal eating a prey animal, fishing
This short film is adorable!! And moody! :D Also the somewhat emotional twist at the end had me going "NOOOOOOO!!! :O" (but not in a "made me feel sad for the rest of the day" way, thankfully).
cw: flashing images/colors
cw: eyestrain
cw: flashing images, eyestrain, blood
Context: This fanwork, a "lyricstuck" with added video editing, is for the webcomic Homestuck. This video focuses on the character dynamics between a teenager named Dave and his older brother who raised him.
cw: cartoon fish guts/butchering (first 9 seconds only)
this one is hard for me to judge how much of a flashing lights/eyestrain warning it has, cause it seems fine for most of the video but then it switches really fast to more high-contrast colors and adds in some white flashes as visual effects, so... yeah, probably still need to tag it
Context: This is a fan animation for the anime tv series SK8 the infinity, in which the character Reki (red hair) teaches Langa (blue hair) how to skateboard.
cw: creator notes "flashing images, fluff" in title
Context: This fanmade video features an Umbreon, a moonlight fox Pokemon (videogame) species.
cw: no content warnings for this video, but the comic itself has strong language
Read the comic here! This video is based on a fancomic, On Borrowed Time, for the videogame Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, with original characters, plotpoints, and worldbuilding that go beyond the game. A lot of the Pokemon are redesigned, too. Check it out! :>
cw: dragon has a hard fall and dies(?) with mild stylized blood
Context: This is a fanmade animatic for the webcomic Homestuck, reflecting on how the main character, at the end of their journey, questions where they stand then and now. The video depicts this main character, John Egbert, as the transgender June Egbert, a popular headcannon/fanon that fits well with the protagonist's feelings, growth, and experiences by the comic's ending (in my opinion).
cw: trypophobia warning at 1:17 (some black holes atop hair appear briefly), flashing images & tv static effect, eyestrain (bright red), mild stylized eye trauma(?) at 1:12
This flash animation is a trailer for NightMargin's short flash webcomic project, Margin, which is no longer viewable on DeviantArt, but you can still access it on FlashPoint's library (flash game & animation archive software).
cw: major spoilers, various screen transition effects, blood
Context: This is a fan animation for the Pokemon Adventures manga (Pokemon Special in Japan) spanning the original Kanto arc all the way up to the Sun & Moon arc, celebrating the long-running manga's 20th anniversary. The manga is based on the main Pokemon videogame series, but has some unique elements and a greater focus on plot and characters. Original NicoNico upload
This animation is based on the farming life simulation game Stardew Valley, which takes place in the fictional location of Pelican Town. The character in this video is Elliott, a writer and resident of Pelican Town whom the player can befriend, date, and/or marry.
There are lots of different types of animation and roles/techniques... Rigging, 2D puppeting, stop-motion, traditional hand-drawn 2D animation, 3D animation, motion media... The 12 Principles of Animation... The lists above are commonly-used software I run into in the world of hobby, indie, and student-made animation. I mean some are industry-standard, too, like ToonBoom, but I wanted to provide a list with a range of accessibility options. I have seen super cool stuff made with all of these, and there are options for use with both computers and mobile devices. You can always animate on paper, too! Traditional animation, experimental animation, check it all out...

Some Youtube animators' acronyms
Animation Meme - Usually inspired by a single original video that gains popularity, many animators will try their hand at making their own version of the video using the same audio clip and similar themes, sequence, composition/structure, etc. Sometimes it's a nearly identical video just with different characters, like the artist's OCs; other times there's almost nothing in common except the audio clip.
AMV - Animation Music Video (can also mean Anime Music Video, which isn't a user-made animation, it's when someone edits clips from anime set to a song)
PMV - Picture Music Video, which isn't animated, instead these use still images
MAP - Multiple Animator Project, usually for these a bunch of animators contribute a few seconds of animation to a full song/sequence and the end result is a fun mish-mash of lots of different styles and imagery from all the contributors
MEP - Multiple Editor Project, similar to an MAP but it's more about dynamic editing (often in AfterEffects and/or Sony Vegas) of still images and text rather than animation
Animatic - These use still drawings instead of animation but, unlike a PMV, are usually intentionally rough and undetailed, like mostly line drawings or quick, messy sketches. They often use audio from skits, comedy sketches, or television clips, not just songs. In the film and animation industries, animatics are used to create a rough test-run of a sequence before actually animating or filming it. It's different from a storyboard because storyboards are flat and aren't timed and edited for a video, but animatics ARE timed, playable sequences with audio. (You CAN use the panels of a storyboard to MAKE an animatic out of them, though.) I hope I didn't confuse you ^^;
Lyricstuck - basically a PMV inspired by the webcomic Homestuck, originally a popular format for pairing stills with music on Tumblr posts
Removed "pale machine" and "summer days animation meme" (cw: potentially strong language/sexual lyrics - it's a macklemore song and I'm not 100% sure if I hear the lyrics right; visuals are not inappropriate - just a cute animal character dancing) by joycawn on 3/1/2022 because their Youtube channel shut down.
Removed "the snippet - yume nikki/2kki/.flow (animation thing??) by CloudNyan on 9/25/2022 because the Youtube video was set to Private. The CWs I wrote for it were: flashing images/lights/colors, eyestrain, body horror, blood. Thumbnail cw: BODYHORROR, BLOOD, Note: Putting careful notes on this one just cause it might gross out someone who hasn't played the source games. If you've played these games, then it's nothing surprising. Context: This is a fanmade animation for Yume Nikki and its fangames, .flow and Yume 2kki. These are RPGMaker games of the horror and exploration genres in which you play as a girl who traverses various surreal dreamscapes that have no dialogue and leave much up to the player's interpretation.
I've included the links for the removed videos in case they're ever made public again, or if someone hopes to possibly find them again on the Wayback Machine/Internet Archive.
